National Institute for Student Success Launches Partner Scholarship Program for Minority-Serving Institutions
ATLANTA – Georgia State University’s National Institute for Student Success (NISS) has launched a partner scholarship program to provide Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) access to the institute’s student support consulting services. The work is supported by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation.
Partner scholarships will enable institutions with limited financial resources to access NISS fee-based diagnostic and coaching services. The NISS Diagnostic includes an analysis of 20 years of institutional data, a survey of campus stakeholders, and follow-up interviews that result in a set of recommendations for improving student success outcomes on the campus. NISS coaches then utilize structured learning modules, capacity-building seminars, technical assistance, and site visits to foster the skills and capacities necessary for each partner institution to implement the recommendations.
The NISS will provide high-touch services to HBCUs, MSIs and HSIs with enrollments of approximately 2,000 students or more that serve large populations of Pell-eligible students. Schools will be selected to receive a scholarship through a survey and interview process.
“We understand that access to NISS services may not be possible for schools with limited financial resources,” said Dr. Timothy Renick, the NISS’s founding director. “The Dell Foundation’s generous support will greatly reduce these financial barriers for target colleges and universities that have demonstrated the potential for scaled change and a commitment to reducing institutional barriers to college completion.”
Over the next 10 years, the NISS aims to help 100 colleges and universities develop Student Success systems that result in increased rates of college enrollment and completion for students from all backgrounds, particularly for students from traditionally underserved populations.
“Georgia State is a national example of how higher education institutions can support the success of all students, no matter their backgrounds or the challenges they may face in college,” said Sara Levy, program manager at the Dell Foundation. “Through this partnership, the NISS will help institutions identify and resolve systemic barriers to equity and college completion so that every student has access to the opportunities they deserve.”
