Rising Tide II: Do Black Students Benefit as Grad Rates Increase?

January 1, 2016

Graduation rates, when disaggregated by student demographics, shows that data often masks the outcomes of Black students. This report analyzed 232 institutions and found that graduation rates improved 5.6 points for White students over a ten year period (2003-2013) compared to a 4.4 point increase for Black students. However, almost 70 percent increased graduation rates for Black students and almost half of those decreased the gap between White and Black students. Higher education institutions can improve graduation rates for Black students when they intentionally focus on removing barriers to student success and implementing a continuous line of support to meet student needs.
